Combined fireplaces and cooking stoves; boilers, arrangement of.-A conversion unit for application to a range, from which the grate is removed, comprises a barless grate associated with a flue or flues which are fitted in communication with the range flues. The unit shown comprises a base plate 3 with supporting members 4, which carries the grate 1, the side plates 6, 7 and the back plate, the latter comprising vertical bottom and top portions 12, 14 and a central backwardly inclined portion 13 which extends into the range. Lugs 9 are provided on the rear edges of the plates 6, 7 for bolting to the face of the range. The side walls of the unit are completed by plates 15, 16 which extend between the plates 6, 7 and the part 14 of the black plate. The walls are lined with fireclay or the like 22, and an inclined baffle 23 divides the interior of the unit into front and rear parts 24, 25, there being a space 26 beneath the lower edge of the baffle. A flue 35, controlled by a damper 36, is formed between a canopy 33 and a plate 30, extending from the front edges of the plates 15, 16 to the top of the baffle 23. For heating the room only, the grate 1 is employed, the gases passing through the flue 35 to the flue 27 over the boiler; or, if the damper is closed, through the space 26 to the flue 28 below the boiler. For heating the boiler a fire is made, as shown, in the bottom of the rear part 25, the fuel being fed through the usual opening 42 in the range top. A damper or dampers may be provided for closing either or both of the flues 27, 28.
