Lathes; chucks.-A half coco-nut is placed between two spring-closed gripping arms 64 pivoted in a plate 62 having marked thereon a circle 69 to assist in positioning the nut. The pate is provided with a handle and its base 59 is carried in slides 60 extending across a longitudinally movable table 56. The. table 56 is moved until the coco-nut can be pushed forward into the jaws 36 of a rotating chuck, its rounded end bearing against a spring 53 in the centre of the chuck. The chuck comprises a body 27, to which, are pivoted bell-crank levers 32 actuating the jaws 36, and a sliding portion 28 having sockets to contain balls at the extremities of the short arms of the bell-crank levers 32. The jaws 36 move in slots formed in projections from the body 27. A groove 37 is formed in the sliding portion 28 and is fitted with a ring 38 connected by a link 40 to an operating lever 41 pivoted on a bracket 25, and provided with a locking device comprising a ball normally pressed by a spring into position between converging surfaces on the lever and the bracket but adapted to be moved into non- locking position by a handle 50. After the nut has been gripped in the chuck the holding device is withdrawn and the table 56 moved along its rails 58 until the tool 70 is opposite the chuck. The tool has several cutting edges 71 and is secured in a pivoted holder 72 by a screw 73. The holder is normally urged by a spring 77 to bring the tool against the inner wall of the nut and is mounted in a stand 76 movable in guides 79. The holder is fed forward by a half-nut 86 on a lever 84 pivoted on the stand 76 engaging a rotating screw 80. A spring tends to throw the half-nut out of engagement with the screw, but is normally maintained inoperative by a dog adapted to. be tripped when the tool 70 is fed forward sufficiently to be approximately in line with the axis of the chuck. The screw 80 is mounted in brackets depending from the table 56 and is driven from a shaft 88 having a bevel gear meshing with a bevel gear 102 on a vertical shaft 100 mounted in a bearing also depending from the table 56. A second bevel gear 101 on this shaft meshes with a bevel gear 98 on a sleeve 97 splined to a shaft 19 and mounted in a bearing on a circular table 95 movable about an axis directly below the axis of the shaft 100. At its other end the shaft 19 is supported by a bearing 18 mounted on another table 16 movable around a shaft 14 to which the shaft 19 is connected by gears 20, 15. The shaft 14 is connected to the shaft 23 of the chuck by gears 21, 22. A belt 105 passes over a pulley 104 on the end of the shaft 83 and drives a shaft 107 having a pulley 103 over which passes a broad endless belt 109 to discharge the shreds of coco-nut. This broad belt is bent back sharply under the pulley 108 to permit the shreds to fall into receptacles.
