Abstract

A chromium ore such as chromite is first treated as by heating with carbon or hydrogen to reduce the metals, and the reduced material is then heated with dry gaseous hydrobromic, hydrochloric, hydrofluoric or hydriodic acid so as to volatilize the ferrous halogenide, which is collected. The remaining material is then further treated with free halogen to obtain the chromic salt. The chromium salt may be treated with sulphuric acid to obtain the sulphate and recover the halogen acid or may be treated with a current of air, oxygen or ozone, preferably mixed with some chlorine at 300-500 DEG C. to obtain chlorochromic acid which is passed through a tube heated to a low temperature to obtain chromic acid or at a higher temperature to obtain chromium oxide, and in each case to recover the hydrochloric acid; or it may be passed into water to obtain chromic and hydrochloric acids. If the chromium ore contains magnesium the chromium chloride produced may be quickly washed with water to remove the magnesium chloride. The ferrous chloride obtained is heated in a stream of oxygen or ozone to obtain ferric oxide and recover the halogen.
