Abstract
Ferrous and ferric chlorides; ferric oxide; sulphur.--In a modification of the process of the parent Specification, the ferric chloride produced by the chlorinating of ferrous chloride is divided into two portions, the major portion (at least two-thirds) being diverted to the first stage of the process and used as a chlorinating agent for the raw sulphide or oxide ore with removal and condensation of sulphur vapours, while the remainder is oxidized with air to ferric oxide, liberating chlorine for re-use in the second stage, viz. the chlorination into ferric chloride of the ferrous chloride produced from the ore. The ferric chloride is removed in the form of vapour, split into two streams as above and the cycle repeated. The condenser used for collecting the sulphur is preferably of the type of a tubular boiler, in which the vapours are contacted with water-cooled surfaces maintained at a temperature corresponding to a steam pressure of 2 to nearly 6 atmospheres. Specification 355,272 is referred to.
