Abstract

A control system for fluid supply to a plurality of pneumatic rams 2 used to operate granular material dispensers provided at the discharge outlet of hoppers 1 comprises a shuttle valve 6 for each ram 2. A push-button valve 7 is connected by an air line 8 to each shuttle valve 6 and air supply to the push-button valves 7 is through a main air line 9 from a supply 10. Each shuttle valve is also fed by a master air line 11 through a single pilot valve 12 operated by a main push-button valve 13. Each dispenser is operated individually by pressing the individual push- button valves 7 or all dispensers can be operated simultaneously for batch by pressing the push-button valve 13. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A Control System The invention relates to a control system for fluid supply to a plurality of operating elements such as rams used to operate granular material dispensers such as the dispensers described in my Irish Patent Specification No. 43812 (corresponding to British Patent Specification No. 1571847) and the specification of Irish Application No. 353/80 (49516).
In this specification the term "granular material" includes grain, animal feedstuffs such as dairy nuts or pulp nuts, rice, sugar, crushed stone and the like relatively free-flowing materials.
Generally apparatus for dispensing granular material comprises a hopper, which usually has a pair of discharge outlets each closed by a dispenser.
Each dispenser may, for example, comprise a cylindrical body rotatably mounted in the hopper and having an axially extending opening through which material is delivered into the dispenser from the hopper, and, on rotation of the dispenser, through which material is delivered from the dispenser through the discharge outlet of the hopper and into a feeding trough. In animal rearing units generally a large number of hoppers are arranged around an enclosure and the dispensers are operated by pneumatic rams whose movement is controlled by a pneumatic control system.
Heretofore such pneumatic control systems have generally been relatively complex and expensive and to satisfy the requirement of being able to operate each dispenser individually or all dispensers simultaneously a large number of valves was required.
For example to operate the six dispensers described with reference to Fig. 5 of my Irish Patent Application No.353/80 (49516) eighteen valves are required to allow each dispenser to be operated individually or all dispensers to be operated simultaneously.
There is therefore a need for the relatively simple and inexpensive control system for such granular material dispensers.
This invention is directed towards providing a control system for fluid supply to a plurality of operating elements, for a plurality of granual material dispensers which will be relatively inexpensive and can be easily operated and maintained.
According to the invention there is provided a control system for a fluid supply to operating elements of a plurality of granular material dispensers, the control system comprising an operating valve for each operating element, the operation of the operating valve and hence the operating element and the granular material dispenser being controlled by an individual switch or one main switch.
In one embodiment of the invention each operating valve is a shuttle valve. Preferably each shuttle valve is supplied with operating fluid through a single common pilot valve.
Typically the main switch controls pilot fluid supply to the pilot valve.
In another embodiment of the invention each individual switch comprises a push-button valve.
The main switch may also be a push-button valve.
In one embodiment of the invention the control system is a pneumatic control system. In another embodiment of the invention the control system is a hydraulic control system.
Usually the operating elements are pneumatic rams for operating granular material dispensers. In this case the individual switches for each dispenser may be mounted on a local operating panel adjacent the dispenser and the main switch may be mounted on one local panel.
The invention will be more clearly understood from the following description thereof given by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a diagrammatic view of a number of hoppers and dispensers for granular material illustrating the control system for operation of the dispensers.
Referring to the drawing there are illustrated three hoppers 1 for granular material. Each hopper 1 has two discharge outlets each of which is closed by a dispenser (not shown) which may for example be of the type described in my Irish Patent Specification No. 43812 and the specification of Application No.
353/80,43516. Each dispenser is operated by an operating element which in this case comprises a pneumatic ram 2 and return spring 3. Each ram 2 is connected by an air line 5 to an operating valve which in this case is a shuttle valve 6. An individual switch which in this case comprises a push-button valve 7 is connected by an air line 8 to each shuttle valve 6. Air supply to the push-button valves 7 is through a main air line 9 from a supply 10. Each shuttle valve 6 is also fed by a master air line 11 through a pilot valve 12 operated by a main switch, in this case a push-button valve 13 which is connected to the pilot valve 12 through a pilot air line 14 which is connected to the main air line 9 by a tee connector 15.
In use, each dispenser may be operated individually by pressing the individual push-button valves 7 or all dispensers can be operated simultaneously for batch feed by operating the single main push-button valve 13.
It will be appreciated that in the drawing the location of the various valves and air lines has been schematically illustrated. in use, the two pushbutton valves 7 associated with a single hopper may be mounted on a local panel in a convenient location adjacent the hopper for convenient operator access. One of the local panels may be fitted with the master push-button valve to facilitate batch operation of all the dispensers simultaneously. It will also be appreciated that while the invention has been described with reference to dispensers from three hoppers it may be applied to any number of dispensers and hoppers.
The principal advantage of the invention is in providing a control system for a number of granular material dispensers, which is relatively inexpensive and easy to install and operate.
It will be appreciated that while the invention has been described with particular reference to a pneumatic control system it may also be applied to a hydraulic control system.
