Abstract

29,325. Johnson, J. Y., [Badische Anilin & Soda Fabrik]. Dec. 19. Chromium and iron chlorides are obtained by heating chromium ores such as chrome ironstone with gaseous hydrochloric acid or chlorine and with a reducing-agent such as coal, coke, or carbon monoxide, the products being separated bv volatilization. When hydrochloric acid is use the iron chloride volatilizes and the chromium chloride is dissolved out of the mass with water; when chlorine is used, both chlorides usually volatilize, the chromium chloride depositing on the cooler parts of the apparatus. In examples, chrome ironstone and coke are heated in a current of hydrochloric acid; and chrome ironstone is heated in a current of carbon monoxide and chlorine until ferric chloride is no longer evolved, whereupon soluble impurities are extracted with water and the chromium chloride is extracted in any suitable way.
