Abstract
<PICT:0466705/III/1> The production of anhydrous metal halides, particularly chlorides, by reacting mixtures of carbon and compounds of the metals with halogens or halogen-yielding substances at temperatures sufficient to volatilize the halides formed is carried out in an electric resistance furnace using the reaction mixture as electric resistance. Ores, minerals, or intermediate products of the metals may be used, and coal, coke, retort carbon, or graphite as the reducing agent. The reaction mixture may be in granular or briquette form. It may be coked prior to use, and may be preheated as by passing hot gases therethrough. When mixtures of metal halides are volatilized they may be separated by fractional condensation. The process may be carried out continuously in a furnace a having electrodes d, d1, reaction mixture being supplied at g and halogen gas at e. Volatilized halides are withdrawn at f and reaction residues at h. Examples relate to the production of beryllium chloride from a coked mixture of beryllium oxide, wood charcoal, and pitch, of beryllium and aluminium chlorides from a coked mixture of beryl, coal, and pitch, and of chromium and ferric chlorides from a coked mixture of chrome iron ore and coal. The production of chlorides of zirconium, thorium, titanium, tungsten, and molybdenum is also referred to.
