Abstract
20,408. Herbert, A., and Vernon, P. V. Sept. 14. Screw-and-nut mechanism.-Relates to means for obtaining longitudinal movement in either direction from a constantly rotating shaft provided with right and left handed screw-threads. The two threads on the spindle A are engaged by nuts B, C with threads of opposite hand. The nuts are separated by a collar H and have external conical or flat surfaces B<1>, B<2>, and C<1>, C<2>. To brake either of the nuts and so move the non-rotatable casing E in either direction, a non-rotatable sleeve D with conical or flat surfaces D, D<1> is moved in either direction to engage the nuts and move them into engagement with coned surfaces F, G on the casing E The sleeve D carries teeth D<3> engaged by a pinion K on a shaft L operated by a lever M, rack bar N, pinion O<1>, and lever P.
