Abstract

199,546. Driscoll, R. A. April 24, 1922. Extracting.- An electric furnace for smelting iron, particularly ores containing sulphur, in regions where low grade fuel such as slack coal and oil residues are available, comprises a furnace chamber 11, a rotary inclined tube 28 communicating at its lower end with the upper part thereof and at its upper end with the furnace stack 41, a fixed tube 44 communicating with the upper end of the inclined tube and with a container 45, and a screw conveyer 50 situated in the container and extending into the fixed tube and adapted to feed the charge which may consist of ore, slagging, materials and fuel, from the container into the rotary tube. An auxiliary fuel container 23 fitted with a charging tube 21 and a screw conveyer 22 may be provided. Compressed air is supplied to tuyeres 52. The furnace charge is easily controlled and a pig iron containing a high or low percentage of silicon and carbon may be produced.
