Abstract
387. Lash, H. W. Jan. 7. Blast-furnace charges; open-hearth processes.- Iron is extracted in an open-hearth or smelting furnace from a mixture of finely-ground oxide, such as iron sand or scale, finely-divided pig-iron containing a high percentage of carbon, silicon, phosphorus, manganese, or other impurities capable of uniting with the oxygen of the ore, and powdered carbonaceous material. Readily combustible material, such as sawdust or bituminous coal, may be used to facilitate the starting of the smelting. The mixture may be briquetted by means of pitch, oil, or other binder.
