Abstract
Lithium nitride is prepared in the finely-divided state by heating lithium amalgam in an atmosphere of nitrogen until the mercury has distilled away. The product can be employed as a catalyst in nitrogen fixation, particularly the synthesis of ammonia, in which case it is stated that the synthesis can be effected without the use of pressure or at low pressures and at relatively low temperatures. Specification 28167/11 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the preparation of any metal, its hydride or nitride, in a finely-divided state by first preparing the amalgam of the metal and then heating it in vacuo, hydrogen or nitrogen respectively. The metals specifically referred to are alkaline earth metals, lithium, chromium, manganese, and cerium. The powdered products also serve as catalytic materials, particularly for the synthesis of ammonia. According to the example, chromium p amalgam is prepared by electrolysis and then distilled either in vacuo to obtain powdered chromium or in nitrogen to obtain the nitride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.ALSO:Lithium nitride is prepared in the finely-divided state by heating lithium amalgam in an atmosphere of nitrogen until all the mercury has distilled away.
