Abstract
1525759 Magnesium alloy MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON Ltd 17 Dec 1976 [22 Dec 1975] 52485/75 Heading C7A A magnesium alloy consisting of Mg at least 80% Zn 4-7 RE 1-5 where the RE contains at least 60% neodymium and substantially no Ce or La, may contain up to 1% Zr as a grain refiner and Cu 0-0À5 Ag 0-8 Ca 0-5 Li 0-6 Ca 0-1 Ga 0-2 In 0-2 Tl 0-5 Pb 0-1 Bi 0-1 Th 0-7 Fe 0-0À1 Be 0-0À05 Y 0-5 Mn 0-2 the maxima of Mn and Zr being limited by their mutual solubility when both are present. Optimum tensite properties coupled with good castability and weldability may be obtained by solution treating between 450C and the solidus, preferably 480C, quenching, preferably in water followed by ageing at 100-350C, preferably 250C. Alternatively, the material may be aged at 250C without prior solution treatment, to give high YS but the TS and %El are reduced.
