Abstract
1,169,104. Refining aluminium-silicon alloys. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. Jan.11, 1967 [Jan.13, 1966], No. 1644/67. Headings C7A and C7D. Al alloys containing 5-14% Si are refined by adding to the melt 0À001-2% Sr or Sr and Ba. Alloys which may be refined are (a) Al Si alloys containing Mg (e.g. 5, 7 or 10% Mg), or Mg plus Zn (e.g. 10% Mg + 8% Zn), together with usual impurities i.e. Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Ti, Pb, Sn in a total amount not exceeding 8%, and (b) Al Si alloys containing Cu (e.g. Cu 4%) together with usual impurities, i.e. Mg, Zn, Mn, Fe, Ni, Ti, Pb, Sn in a total amount not exceeding 8%. The Sr/Ba may be added as pure metals; alloys (e.g. of Al); or compounds, e.g. oxide, sulphate or carbonate, in admixture if desired with alkali metal salt or finely-divided metal such as Al or Mg. Exemplified alloys consist of (1) Al 7-Si 0À65-Mg 0À1-Sr, (2) A1 12-Si 0À3-Sr, (3) Al 9À7-Si 0À1-Sr, (4) 8À2-Si 9À7-Zn 0À36 Mg 0À1-Sr, and (5) Al 8À6-Si 3À6-Cu 0À1-Sr. Example (1) was heat-treated at 535 C, water-quenched, aged at room temperature, and hardened at 160C.
