Abstract

1431639 Chromium electro-plating IBM UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 11 Dec 1974 53624/74 Heading C7B Cr or Cr alloy, e.g. Co-Cr or Ni-Cr, is electroplated on to a cathode e.g. of brass or Cu in a plating solution having a source of Cr comprising a Cr (III) - thiocyanate complex, preferably an aquo or amine Cr (III) thiocyanate complex or mixture of such complexes, e.g. prepared by heating NaNCS with Cr (ClO 4 ) 3 solution; the latter is prepared by adding together Na 2 Cr 2 O 7 , HClO 4 , water and H 2 O 2 . The plating solution may contain 0À03 to 0À5 M Cr (III) 0À05 to 1À0 M NCS and saturation (50 g/l) of boric acid, and have a pH 2 to 3À5. The C.D. may be 20 to 120mA/cm<SP>2</SP>; the voltage may be 7 to 15 volts. A platinized Ti anode may be used immersed in an anolyte of Na ClO 4 separated from the plating solution by a cation exchange membrane. For plating Co or Ni chrome alloy, the plating solution also contains CoSO 4 or NiSO 4 .
