Abstract

1422119 Grinding screw thread taps COVENTRY GAUGE & TOOL CO Ltd 16 Feb 1973 [6 May 1972] 21227/72 Heading B3D [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for grinding a screw thread tap or tap blank 1 comprises means for laterally oscillating the tap being ground relative to a grinding wheel 23 in timed relation with rotation of the tap in order to impart relief to the thread. The apparatus may be in the form of a machine or an attachment therefor. The tap is held between centres 37, 38 in head and tail stocks 27, 28 on a cradle 22 supported by pivots 24 on a support structure 25 mountable on a machine base 26. A driver 31 for the tap is mounted on the spindle of the headstock, and the spindle is connected through a floating coupling 36 with the machine drive shaft 34. A single lobe cam 12 is mounted on a layshaft 42 driven by gearing 44, 45 from the drive shaft 34. A spring 40 acts on the cradle to press the cam against a follower 33 mounted on the headstock 27 so that as the spindle rotates, the cradle oscillates so that the grinding wheel 23 grinds the relief on the screw threads. The taps may be automatically loaded into the machine after axial transverse of the tap. The centre of the tailstock is movable hydraulically to release the tap and a fresh tap is fed between the centres by a loading apparatus having a lifter 61 which can be raised by a movable cylinder 62 sliding over a fixed piston 63 to carry a tap 1 into a holder 64 having a spring latch 65. The holder is advanced by hydraulic means 67 to position the tap between the centres 37, 38. When the centres grip the work, the holder is reloaded, the spring latch riding over the tap. The taps to be ground are disposed in a magazine 60 which may be inclined and the taps may be advanced to the holder by an actuating means 68.
