Abstract

1415920 Regenerating used lubricating oils L G WIELEZYNSKI 17 Oct 1973 [20 Oct 1972] 48275/73 Heading C5E In a process for regenerating used lubricating oils the oil is sprayed in pulses into the top of a first column into which liquid propane is also introduced, removing insoluble residue of the oil is removed from the bottom of the column and a solution of oil and propane is removed from the top of the column and passed through a plurality of further columns, propane is introduced in pulses into the top of one of the further columns in countercurrent to the flow of oil and a solution of purified oil and propane is removed from the last column. The oil 1 is injected into the zone 4 as pulses by the pump 2 and the oil-propane solution formed is passed through line 8 into the column 9, then through a perforated pipe 15 into the column 10 and thence into column 16. Insoluble residue is removed from the bottoms of columns 4, 9, 10 and 11 via line 7. A reflux is formed at the head of the column 11 composed of propane and a small quantity of the lightest lubricant hydrocarbons and is recycled as pulses by pump 12 to a perforated pipe 14 in the column 9. The oil-propane mixture 17 is filtered at 18, the propane is evaporated off in a coil 20 and compressed, liquified and recycled by a compressor 23; the oil product 24 is recovered from the tank 22. The apparatus is mounted on a platform which transmits vibrations to the columns 4, 9, 10 and 11 to improve the separation of insolubles from the oil-propane mixture.
