Abstract

1409719 Coating compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971 25 Feb 1972] 58995/71 and 8863/72 Headings C3P and C3R Coating compositions comprise (1) a dispersion of particles of a film-forming addition polymer in a single-phase inert organic liquid in which the disperse polymer is insoluble but which contains 40 to 75 weight per cent of a solvent for the polymer, the dispersion being stabilized by a polymeric stabilizer comprising an anchoring component which associates with the particles and a solvated component which provides a stabilizing steric barrier around the particles, the stabilizer being covalently linked to the disperse polymer, and (2) a cross-linking resin having reactive methylol or alkoxymethyl groups, the disperse addition polymer containing (a) reactive groups capable of cross-linking with said cross-linking resin and (b) carboxylic acid groups capable of catalysing the crosslinking reaction. The addition polymer may be derived from (a) hydroxyalkyl and alkoxyalkyl esters and amides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, (b) acrylic, methacrylic and itaconic acids, and optionally unreactive comonomers such as alkyl acrylates and methacrylates, styrene, vinyl toluene, divinyl benzene, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride and vinyl acetate. The cross-linking resin may be a condensate of formaldehyde with urea, melamine or thiourea, or a C 1-4 alkyl ether thereof. The compositions may also contain supplementary film-forming polymers soluble in the organic liquid, plasticizers, fillers and pigments, particularly metal flake pigments to provide "flip" tone finishes. In examples polymer dispersions are prepared by copolymerizing styrene, methyl methacrylate, hydroxyethyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate and methacrylic acid in organic liquids in the presence of methacrylic esters of glycidyl methacrylate / methyl methacrylate / glycidyl methacrylate - poly - 12 - hydroxystearic acid condensate copolymers, octyl mercaptan and azodiisobutyronitrile; and the resulting dispersions made into paints by mixing with butylated melamine/formaldehyde resins, linear polydimethyl siloxanes, aluminium flake pigments and/or organic pigments.
