Abstract

1408639 Porous coated products YUASA BATTERY CO Ltd 25 Oct 1972 49131/72 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions Dl and H1] A porous body is produced by evaporating a first liquid and a second liquid miscible with the first from a combination of said liquids and a synthetic resin, said resin being soluble in said first liquid but not in said second liquid. Preferably the evaporation is accomplished by microwave irradiation for 3 to 10 seconds. A solution of the resin in the first liquid or in a mixture of the two liquids is applied to a porous fibrous sheet material, such as a paper, sponge woven or knitted cloth or a non-woven cloth or formed into a sheet by casting into a film or plate or extruding into a non-solvent such as water. As shown a substrate 2 is passed through synthetic solution 5, squeezed by rolls 6, 6' to remove excess solution, optionally passed through water 5' and dried by passing upwards through a multicompartment dryer 7 having a microwave emitter in the top compartment. Microwave absorbtion is increased by the presence of a polar liquid. The irradiation evaporates the liquids and coagulates the resin into open or closed cells. A plasticiser produces small open cells. Example 1 describes the application of polyvinyl chloride dissolved in tetrahydrofuran/ isopropyl alcohol to a non-woven polyester fabric of 0.1 mm thickness and its coagulation by microwaves. In example 2 polystyrene dissolved in the above solvent mixture was applied to a polyvinyl chloride sheet. In example 3 dichlorodiphenyslulphone - bisphenol resin and titanium oxide in chloroform/isopropanol was applied to a polyethylene sheet. In example 4 polyvinylidine fluoride in dimethylformamide was applied to a polyethylene sheet, the sheet dipped in water and irradiated. In the second part of example 4 the same resin solution was extruded as a sheet into water or cast onto polyester film or teflon sheet, dipped in water, irradiated and removed from the film or sheet. In example 5 ABS resin in methyl ethyl ketone was applied to a 0.5 mm thick aluminium foil etched to form an oxide film, dipped in ethyl alcohol and irradiated with microwaves to yield an electrolytic condenser. In example 6 a solution of polyvinyl chloride and vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer dissolved in tetrahydrofuran/ isopropyl alcohol was applied to one side of a polyester film and microwave irradiated. The resulting white porous sheet was placed upon a sheet of newspaper and irradiated with infra red rays. The black print absorbed heat, causing the microcells of the white sheet to collapse to form transparent letters. The porosity, average cell diameter, cell count, breathability and electric resistance in sulphuric acid and potassium hydroxide of the products of examples 1 to 4 are disclosed. The products are used as filters or electrolytic diaphragms, absorbing materials and artificial leathers may also be produced. Lists of first and second liquids are given.
