Abstract

Porous film is made by perforating a film of polymeric material which has been stretched biaxially to increase its dimensions by 100-600% at a temperature below its softening temperature, and heating the perforated film to shrink it to approximately the initial area. The polymer may be polypropylene, polyethylene which may have been irradiated, polyvinyl chloride or polyvinylidene chloride. Perforation may be performed on individual sheeting or in pads or stacks of sheets, by a uniformly spaced pattern of punches or by flame perforation. The perforation diameter may be 1.3 mm. and the average maximum dimension of the perforation after shrinking may be 0.2-0.6mm. If the elongation during stretching was the same in both directions, initially round perforations after shrinking will be round; otherwise they will be slits. The holes may permit passage of liquid water before shrinking but not after; the porous film is, however, permeable to water vapour and oxygen.
