Abstract
Heavy or toxic metal-containing exhaust gas from combustion furnaces is scrubbed for example using water which circulates. The water in this case is enriched with the metals scrubbed out from the exhaust gas. Ferrous ions and alkali are added to the enriched scrubbing water. In addition, an oxidising gas is bubbled into the enriched scrubbing water. As a result, the majority of the ferrous ions are oxidised and crystal particles which contain ions are precipitated from the water. These crystal particles are then separated from the liquid phase, as a result of which a secondary contamination can be avoided.
