Abstract

1468001 Carbonyl nickel INCO EUROPE Ltd 13 May 1974 [15 May 1973] 22961/73 Heading C7D 'B' type nickel powder consisting of agglomerates of interlocking filaments or chains of interconnected particles having a low e.g. less than 1 g/ml bulk density can be obtained by the decomposition of nickel carbonyl in a decomposer, with or without the presence of an inert diluent gas, usually CO in which the rate of carbonyl input, the amount of diluent gas and the decomposition temperature are so related that fluffy Mi powder is not deposited on the heated walls of the decomposer, and the fine 'A' type powder produced in the process, up to 15 wt. per cent is removed in the exit gases and recovered separately. Oxygen up to 0À1% by volume preferably 0À01-0À06%, is added to the diluent gas to promote nuclei formation, and the carbonyl concentration is 10-80%, preferably 14-18%, of the total gas volume. With an inner wall temperature of the upper part of the decomposer of 400-500‹C preferably not exceeding 470C and the temperature of the internal space about 240-280‹C, and with a total gas flow of 550m<SP>3</SP>/h and 14-18% carbonyl present, 'B' type powder with a bulk density of 0À5-0À9 g/ml and a Fisher particle size of 2À87- 3À07 Ám was obtained.
