Abstract
1361046 Additive for electro-slag melting ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICHDUDELANGE SA ARBED 6 July 1971 [10 July 1970 25 Sept 1970] 31765/71 Headings C7D and C7M An additive for an electro-slag melting process such as steel melting, comprises granules of a compacted mixture of a powder metal or alloy and a non metallic matrix consisting mainly of oxides and /or fluorides, the density of the granules being 3À2-6À5g/cc and less than that of the metal or alloy. The metal constituent may be Ti, Mo, V, W, Mn, Nb, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu or their ferro alloys and Al may be included as a dioxidizer. The granules may contain up to 75% metal and the non metallic matrix may be a crushed slag obtained from a previous electro-slag melting process. In an Example, granules containing 40% Cr were formed from a mixture of Fe-CR containing 60% Cr and a crushed slag containing 60% CaF 2 , 20% Al 2 o 3 and 20% CaO. The particle size of the mixture was 0À4-0À8 mm and after compacting the pellets were crushed to 2-4mm granules having a density of 3À5g/cc.
