Abstract
1328166 Continuous casting ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASHOGO ZHAMENI KUIBYSHEVSKY METALLURGICHESKY ZAVOD IMENI VI LENINA 6 May 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 13542/71 Heading B3F Molten metal, e.g. Al or Al alloy, is shaped by an electromagnetic field of an inductor 1 and cooled by a fixed stream of fluid (water) directed to flow, where it first forms, at right angles to the axis of the ingot before it impinges on the ingot, which is continuously withdrawn while molten metal is being fed into the shaping region. The metal flows from a trough 8 and an apertured floating bowl 10 and as it solidifies a starter dummy 5 is lowered. The cooling water flows from at least one annular slit 6 as shown or an equivalent row of holes (possibly staggered) or shorter slits in the wall of a header 3 mounted, with the inductor 1 and an electromagnetic shield 2 on a plate 12 to surround the casting region. There is a lower slit 7 or equivalent row of holes or shorter slits for directing water on to the surface of the casting at an acute angle. For producing a rectangular-sectioned casting, e.g. 6 m. long and 300 x 1260 (or 1560 mm.), the inductor 1 is shaped to produce a convexsided liquid zone of the metal to allow for the uneven contraction during solidification.
