1321384 Coke quenching cars SIMONCARVES Ltd 21 May 1971 [15 June 1970] 16210/71 Heading F4B A coke quenching car travelling along a battery of horizontal coke ovens comprises a smoke-tight sealable box 28, and a foraminous cage 32 disposed within the box, the cage 32 being charged with a hot coke cake and the box 28 then being sealed by a door 29 during travel to a quenching tower. In the form shown, the cage 32 is moved from the box 28 into the quenching tower to avoid pollution and is then returned to the box for dicharge of the quenched coke by opening the bottoms of the cage and box above a coke wharf (59, Fig. 8, not shown). The cage 32 is driven by a rack fixed to the cage engaging pinions on the box and within the tower. Quenching is effected with the cage rotated to a horizontal position within a drum to reduce the water content of the coke. In another embodiment, the car is driven beneath the quenching tower, the box with the cage therein is rotated through 90 degrees and the top surface of the box removed to expose the cage for quenching. A gas-tight seal between the box 28 and the oven chambers 10 may be effected by a guide movable along a platform 15 or by movable plates 31. The walls of the cage 32 are formed by spaced horizontal segments of rectangular metal tubing supported by I- beams.
