Abstract
1399204 Organotin compounds M & T INTERNATIONAL BV 11 Sept 1973 [11 Sept 1972] 42598/73 Heading C2J [Also in Division C3] Organotin carboxylates of the general formula wherein each R is C 1-20 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or cyclo-alkyl which may be inertly substituted, Y is -H or an inert monovalent radical, m is 1 or 2 and n is 0 to 12 are prepared either by (a) reacting (R 3 Sn) 2 O or R 3 SnOH with an appropriate thiophene mono- or di-carboxylic acid at a temperature from ambient to 200‹ C. usually in an inert hydrocarbon solvent, or (b) reacting R 3 SnX where X is halogen with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt of such an acid, usually by heating (or at ambient temperature) in a hydrocarbon diluent. The inert substituent in R, or the inert radical Y itself, may be halogen (especially bromine), alkoxy, aralkoxy, nitro, sulphonyl or alkanoyl and Y may also be a C 1-18 alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical. In the examples, mono- and dicarboxylate compounds are prepared in which n is O, Y is -H or -Br and R is methyl, n-butyl, phenyl or cyclohexyl. The compounds have bactericidal and fungicidal properties and may be incorporated in PVC or other polymer compositions and anti-fouling marine paints or may be used to treat wool yarn.
