Abstract
1385475 Butyraldehyde IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 April 1972 [10 May 1971 14 June 1971] 13916/71 and 27767/71 Heading C2C Butyraldehyde is produced by reacting propylene under elevated pressure with a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen containing not less than 1 mole carbon monoxide per mole of hydrogen at a temperature in the range 110‹ to 150‹ C. in the presence of a liquid solvent for propylene containing in solution a catalyst comprising cobalt and a tertiary phosphine, the atomic ratio of phosphorus to cobalt being at least 1À4 : 1 and the ratio by liquid volume of liquid solvent to propylene being greater than 1 : 3, distilling butyraldehyde from the product and recycling a high boiling residue of the distillation to the process. The product has a high n to iso ratio. Some butanols are formed as by-product. The preferred phosphines have a phosphorus atom in a ring. The solvent may be the high boilers or may initially be, for example, an alkane.
