Abstract
1458375 Oxo process IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 9 April 1974 [9 April 1973] 16877/73 Heading C2C In a process for producing an aldehyde having 3 to 6 carbon atoms by reacting an olefine having one less carbon atom than the aldehyde with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobalt catalyst dissolved in an organic solvent which is more volatile than the aldehyde in which there is recovered a crude product which comprises aldehyde, solvent and dissolved catalyst, the aldehyde is separated from the crude product in the presence of a partial pressure of carbon monoxide in the range 10 to 500 bars, and solvent and dissolved catalyst returned to the reaction. Excess olefine may be recovered from the crude before the aldehyde as may solvent if more volatile. Recovery may be effected by stripping with a gaseous stream comprising carbon monoxide at an appropriate temperature. Hydrogen may be present and the carbon monoxide used may then be fed to the reactor or recycled to the stripper.
