Abstract
1370813 Washing containers OXY METAL FINISHING CORP 14 Dec 1971 [11 Jan 1971] 45336/73 Divided out of 1370812 Heading B8T [Also in Divisions F2 C7 and B2] A method of cleaning or coating the insides of cans comprises the steps of exposing the can to a spray of coating or cleaning material, guiding the can along a path and discharging a blast of air against the can to move it along this path and remove excess coating material or remove residual cleaning liquid thereon. The apparatus for treating the cans comprises a series of treating stations which clean and coat the cans as they pass therethrough each one being identical in layout the only difference being the treating liquid used therein. One such treatment station is shown in Figs. 5 and 7 and comprises a tube 26 surrounding can guiding rails 62. The tube T is flanged at its ends to join with similar tubes. A can entering at the left hand end of Fig. 5 is accelerated by the treating liquid from spray nozzles 82 and is retarded to some extent by treating spray from a lesser number of nozzles 84. The spray material enters from a reservoir, under pressure, from pipes 42, 46 into manifold members 106, 106<SP>1</SP> and excess spray passes through porous members 118, 118<SP>1</SP> and returns to the reservoir. After treatment with liquid the can passes beyond a partition 52 into a second chamber S where it is accelerated by a blast of air from a nozzle 126 which also removes surplus liquid from the surface thereof. As the can leaves the chamber S it passes to the next treatment station.
