Abstract

1377148 Electrostatic spraying apparatus AIR INDUSTRIE 15 June 1942 [2 Aug 1971] 28149/72 Heading B2F A method of electrostatic spraying of an object with a liquid coating product from a spray nozzle outlet includes, to reduce fouling of the nozzle with rebounding particles of the coating product, charging an auxiliary liquid to a high voltage and ejecting the liquid simultaneously with the liquid coating product towards the object from regions situated about the outlet of the spray nozzle. The auxiliary liquid is compatible with the liquid coating product, e.g. water in the case of enamel and solvent in the case of paint, and may be sprayed in a liquid-only form, or as a liquidgas mixture. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the auxiliary liquid is supplied through an inlet 13 having a venturi, Fig. 3 (not shown). An air-liquid mixture leaving the venturi passes into a mixing chamber 10, and enters into a second mixing chamber 11 through tangential conduits in a vortical motion. The mixture is then ejected through hollow needles 9 having bevelled ends and spaced around the periphery of the nozzle, and the needles are charged with the same polarity as the nozzle. Alternatively, the auxiliary liquid may be charged and sprayed from a device separate from the nozzle (not shown). Parts 1 and 2 of the nozzle are metallic and form the charging electrode for the liquid coating product.
