Direct gas-pressure apparatus, automatic; exhaust devices; valves for pressure fluid, actuation of ; direct liquid-pressure apparatus. - Apparatus for raising and forcing solids and semi-solids, such as sand, clinkers, pulp, and heavy oils, comprises a vessel d into which the material is fed from a hopper a, if necessary, by means of jets of air or liquid, and from which it is forced up the pipe f by compressed air &c. admitted to the upper part of the vessel d by a pipe h, and also to the lower part e by a branch pipe k for the purpose of loosening the material and preventing clogging of the outlet. Liquid instead of, or in addition to, air may be admitted to the part e by a pipe l. The admission and exhaust of compressed air is controlled by a valve m operated by an electric motor n. In another form, a pipe is suspended centrally in the chamber d and is filled with water entering with the material. When compressed air is admitted to the upper part of the vessel, this water is forced down and loosens and drives the material towards the delivery pipe. Additional air or water, or both, may be introduced into the base or side of the vessel, or into the delivery pipe, to assist the compressed air introduced at the top. In another form, a number of air-pipes pass down into the vessel d so that compressed air or liquid admitted to them loosens the surrounding material, while a jet brought in at the base under the lower end of the delivery pipe forces the material up the pipe. Air is also admitted above the material and may be admitted to the delivery pipe. The lower part of the delivery pipe may be in the vessel d, and may have a hole for the exhaust of air during the filling of the vessel, and also for the admission of compressed air to the pipe during delivery.
