Abstract
1,229,995. Slag cement. FOSECO INTERNATIONAL Ltd. 18 June, 1969 [26 July, 1968], No. 35874/68. Heading C1H. [Also in Division C7] Hydraulic cement is produced by forming a slag of reduced metal content by tapping into a container a metalliferous slag produced in a process for extracting metal wherein a molten slag layer containing metal is formed above a body of the molten metal, passing a stream of reducing gas through the molten slag and collecting the molten metal formed from the slag at the bottom of the container, and cooling and crushing the slag of reduced metal content so formed. In the example, slag resulting from the production of ferro-manganese is run into a ladle, lime is added thereto and the slag is both heated and reduced using the CO-H 2 -CO 2 gas resulting from the FeMn production. The process may also be applied to slags containing Cr, V, Ti and Zr. Other reducing gases which may be employed are methane, propane, butane and vaporized fuel oil. Reference is made to the production of cements ranging from standard hydraulic cements to electro-ceramic products by additions of lime, alumina, clay, silica or ferric oxide to the slag.
