Abstract

1292625 Casting processes; mould-lining materials; continuous casting TOYOTA JIDOSHA KOGYO KK and TOYOTA CHUO KENKYUJO KK 22 Oct 1969 [15 April 1969] 51848/69 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions C7 and F4] Al or Al alloy is cast using apparatus, i.e. containers and structures such as smelting crucibles, ladles, runners, pipes and moulds made of ferrous material, e.g. stainless or chromium steel, having an integral boronimpregnated ferrous surface area for contacting the molten metal during casting. Continuous, low-pressure and die casting are examples of types of casting and the provision of the surface is to supplant the known practice of lining the apparatus with kaolin, quartz, magnesia, lime or graphite. Reference is made to producing the boronimpregnated area by gas, liquid or solid methods. It may be produced by dipping in a molten salt bath of, by weight, 90% borax and 10% ZrO 2 for electrolysis. Boron is said to refine the structure of the cast metal.
