Abstract

[Also in Division B2] Apparatus for processing waste material includes a reduction mill 13, Fig. 1, with a regulating flow plate 25 which with bars 26 teara the material into selected size portions before passing it to a final grinding stage, viz. hammers 24 and means to transfer the comminuted waste to a compacting apparatus. The end product is in the form of dry compressed pellets or cubes suitable for collection and disposal. As described, the material ground by hammers 24 is delivered to a settling chamber 27. When a ram 32a, Fig. 4, is retracted the waste falls to the surface of a bottom plate 34 and is then forced into the interior of a packing chamber 40. The outer end 37 of the ram 32a is curved and forms the outer constricting boundary of the packing chamber in a cylinder 38. A ram (38a) in cylinder 38 is then extended and compacts the waste within a barrel 41, Fig. 1. The operation of the rams takes place sequentially under control of hydraulic valves, Fig. 7 (not shown). The high density packed waste is extruded from the end of the packing barrel 41. Deflector plates may be fitted to determine the size of pellets. Liquid is removed via a drain (43).
