Abstract

1276520 Extracting non-ferrous metals METALLGESELLSCHAFT A G 24 Nov 1969 [23 Nov 1968] 57476/69 Heading C7D Non-ferrous metals selected from lead and metals of Groups IB to VIB of the periodic Table are recovered from their oxidic raw materials by reacting the raw material with calcium chloride and possibly sodium chloride to volatilize the desired metal as its chloride, combining the condensed chloride with calcium oxide or carbonate and heating with carbon to form elemental metal and a calcium chloride slag and separating the two. The mixture of raw material and calcium chloride may be pelletized or briquetted, the chloride may be added in solution and carbonaceous material may be included in the agglomerates. The mixture is then heated in a rotary kiln to vaporize the non-ferrous metal chloride. If a mixture of such chlorides is formed they may be separated by fractional condensation and purified by re-distillation. Chloride, mixed with limestone and carbon can be tabletted and heated in a rotary reverberatory furnace to form separate layers of metal and slag which can be separated by decanting or by cooling and dissolving the chloride in water for re-use in the first step.
