Abstract

1275291 Foamed reinforced articles J H LEMELSON 4 July 1969 [11 July 1968] 33796/69 Heading B5A Composite articles, e.g. aircraft bodies and wings, boat hulls, automobile bodies, are produced by distributing and solidifying a first moulding material around the walls of a mould cavity having a rigid, tubular support extending across it, e.g. by rotational moulding, and introducing a second moulding material thereinto and solidifying it. The second material may be foamed and may fill the cavity or be distributed by rotational moulding on the first layer. The rigid tubular support may be perforated to provide means for introduction of moulding material and heat transfer fluid to the cavity. The moulding materials may be epoxy resin, polyester, polycarbonate, polyurethane or polyamide, and the first may contain reinforcing material, e.g. glass fibre, graphite or boron filaments. The rotational mould may be rotated about one axis and tiltable about a second axis, perpendicular to the first. The mould may also contain ducts for heat transfer fluid and/or radio-active curing gas.
