Abstract
1,269,146. Casting processes. INSTITUT PO METALOZNANIE I TECHNOLOGIA NA METALITE. 8 Oct., 1969 [9 Oct., 1968], No. 49526/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] Metal-gas alloys (e.g. N 2 -containing iron alloys) are cast from a reservoir maintained in an atmosphere containing an active gas that dissolves in the molten metal and an inert gas. From the reservoir the molten metal is cast into a mould maintained in a second atmosphere of the active gas or a mixture of the active gas with an inert gas, in which the pressure or partial pressure of the active gas is greater than the partial pressure of the active gas in the first atmosphere about the reservoir, thereby inhibiting degasification of the metal-gas alloy during soldification. In Fig. 1 melt is held in a reservoir 1 within a hermetically sealed housing 2 containing the first atmosphere. A riser tube 3 communicates with a mould 4 above in a second hermetically sealed housing 5 containing the second atmosphere. Each housing 2, 5 is supplied with gas from reservoirs 8, 9 respectively. To cast the melt the total pressure in housing 2 is raised above that in housing 5 and a valve 7 opened so that the melt flows upwardly into the mould 4. Alternatively, the melt can be gravity cast if a bottom-pour reservoir os located above the mould.
