Abstract

1,025,974. Casting processes. STAHL-UND ROHRENWERK REISHOLZ G.m.b.H. Jan. 15, 1963 [March 28, 1962], No. 1764/63. Heading B3F. A casting process comprises passing through the molten metal during solidification a neutral or reducing gas, e.g. argon, which is insoluble in the melt, the gas being passed in a controlled stream of finely divided bubbles from bottom to top of the mould so as to flush non-metallic inclusions to the top. The gas may be led into the mould through a porous stone in the bottom thereof or produced by the vaporization of material, e.g. magnesium, lithium, introduced into the melt in a finely divided state. The gas may serve as a carrier to introduce additional materials for e.g. alloying, deoxidation or desulphuration.
