Abstract

1,263,008. Metal powders. ALLEGHENY LUDLUM STEEL CORP. 9 March, 1970 [7 March, 1969], No. 11164/70. Heading E1K. [Also in Division C7] A steel powder contains dispersed particles of a metal nitride having a free energy of formation of at least -21,000 cal/mole, at an interparticle spacing of no more than 2 microns. The preferred metal nitride is of Ti but those of Al, V or Nb can be used. The powder is formed by internal nitridation in an atmosphere which may be nitrogen or ammonia substantially free from moisture and oxygen and optionally diluted with one or more non-oxidizing gases (e.g. Ar or H 2 ). The nitriding temperature may be from 1600‹F to the melting point of the steel (e.g. 1700- 2200‹F) and the product may be degassed to remove excess N 2 . The powder may be hot pressed, optionally with the addition of powder of a precipitation hardening alloy, to form a coherent body. Exemplary alloy powders contain, prior to nitriding:- B 0.011% C 0.015 or 0.019% Cr 19 or 25.18% Mn 0.1 or 0.2% Ni 14.95 or 21.95% Si 0.5 or 1.08%, and Ti 2.02 or 2.03%, the balance being Fe.
