Abstract

1,260,894. Smelting furnaces. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. 20 Aug., 1969 [8 Oct., 1968], No. 41484/69. Addition to 1,128,719. Heading F4B. [Also in Division C7] An apparatus (suitable for smelting tin ores or concentrates-see Division C7) comprises a low shaft blast furnace of high throughput, means for tapping alloy and slag from the blast furnace to an elongate launder-like furnace, means in said launder-like furnace for introducing an oxidant, a slag weir extending traversely across the launder-like furnace separating a retaining zone and a slag-settling zone, means for separately tapping molten tin and slag from said launder-like furnace, the floor of the refining zone being substantially horizontal in the direction of its longitudinal axis. Figs. 1 and 2 show a preferred apparatus. The shaft furnace 13 connects to the elongate furnace 24 in which 25 represents the horizontal floor and 39 represents the weir, slag being tapped at 38 and metal, after settling at 33, being tapped at 34.
