Abstract

1,258,951. Dental instrument. KALTENBACH & VOIGT. 24 July, 1969 [24 July, 1968; 30 May, 1969], No. 37367/69. Heading A5R. A dental instrument comprises a straight or angled dental handpiece comprising a hollow shank containing a clamping sleeve 3 of elastic material, and a tool 22 which may be held in the shank, such that one or more annular spaces are provided between the clamping sleeve and the shank, at least when the tool is not inserted, the internal diameter of the clamping sleeve being smaller in the region of the annular spaces than the diameter of the tool shank. The sleeve is constructed such that when the tool is inserted one or more further annular spaces 6 are provided between the sleeve and the tool and the sleeve abuts the shank wall adjacent the further annular spaces. In one embodiment clamping tongues 33 are provided by longitudinal slots (not shown) in the clamping sleeve. The clamping sleeve 3 may comprise a metal alloy such as bronze or copper-beryllium. The dental instrument may comprise a turbine handpiece holding a drill, or a handpiece with a mirror held in the hollow shank.
