Abstract

1,257,355. Granulating reactive metals. REACTIVE METALS Inc. May 5, 1969 [May 3, 1968], No. 22835/69. Heading C7X. Miscellaneous pieces of reactive metal (e.g. Ti, Zr, Hf or alloys based thereon) are converted to a useful form for making up a melting charge by feeding them to a water-cooled hearth from which gases that react with the metal are excluded, melting the pieces in said hearth, discharging a stream of molten metal from said hearth, dispersing said stream, and solidifying the resulting dispersed particles in the form of pellets and/or flakes. A suitable apparatus is shown, wherein chamber 10, filled with an inert gas such as argon, houses a water-cooled hearth 12 on trunnions 13, tiltable by means 15. Miscellaneous pieces of metal M are fed from bin 17 into air-tight chute 18, assisted by vibratory feeders 19 and 20, the chute having two air-locks 21 and 22, only one of which can be open at any one time. Pipes 23 and 24 supply chamber 10 and chute 18 with inert gas, or are connected to vacuum. Metal passes to the hearth, where it is melted by an arc from electrode 26, any solid dense inclusions D in the metal sink to the bottom of the melt, and liquid metal overflows at 33 and falls in a stream on to rotating spoked wheel 38 so that flakes F and pellets P collect on the floor 35 of the chamber, whence they may be removed via exit chute 46, water-cooled by pipes 51 but otherwise similar to chute 18, above.
