Abstract
1,257,032. Production of sintered metal strip. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 12, 1969 [March 14, 1968], No. 12484/68. Heading C7D. Sintered metal strip such as steel is made from a slurry comprising a suspension of the metal powder in a binder containing a hygroscopic material which is deposited on a moving support such as a belt or drum, and after drying the coating is removed from the support and rolled and sintered. The hygroscopic material may be a soluble polyhydroxy compound such as glycerol, low molecular weight polyalkylene glycols e.g. trimethylene glycol, polyhydric alcohols e.g. sorbitol, mannitol, and sugars or calcium chloride and is present up to 1% by weight. The preferred binders are soluble cellulose ethers such as methyl cellulose and a sodium salt of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid and a polyoxyalkylene glycol may also be added as a corrosion inhibition and a surface active agent. Rolling is effected at 10 tons/inch width and sintering at 1150C. in H 2 . Rerolling and resintering may be carried out.
