Abstract
1,127,299. Circumferential-flow compressors; silencing gaseous flow. ROTRON MFG. CO. Inc. April 13, 1967 [May 25, 1966], No.17063/67. Headings F1B and F1C. [Also in Division H2] A circumferential-flow compressor has a housing with two toroidal compressor chambers 11, 12, Fig. 1, each co-operating with impeller 20, 22, an annular cavity 25 between the chambers, and inlet and outlet ports communicating with the cavity. An inlet passage and an outlet passage of each chamber each communicates with a respective portion of the cavity which portions are isolated from each other. For parallel operation of the two compressor units, Figs. 2A, 2B (not shown), the cavity is divided by baffles into two portions and the two inlet passages and the inlet port communicate with one portion, and the two outlet passages and the outlet port communicate with the other portion. For series operation, Figs. 3A, 3B (not shown), the cavity is divided by baffles into three portions and one inlet passage of one chamber and one outlet passage of the other chamber communicate with a first portion, the other outlet passage and the outlet port communicate with a second portion, and the other inlet passage and the inlet port communicate with the third portion. The housing is in two parts 10a, 10b, which can be relatively rotated through 180 degrees to assist conversion for series or parallel operation. For independent operation, Figs.4A, 4B (not shown), the cavity is divided by baffles into four portions, the housing is provided with second inlet and outlet ports, and each of the inlet passages communicates with a respective inlet port and each of the outlet passages communicates with a respective outlet port through a respective one of the portions. The baffles may be formed integrally with the housing or secured thereto by fasteners, e.g. screws. Axially-opposite walls of the cavity are provided with noise insulating material 28 held in place by perforated retainers 31. The housing may be cast in metal with the cavity and chambers oversize, and then built up with a hard-setting plastics, e.g. an epoxy compound, to obtain smooth contours.
