Abstract

Wet process phosphoric acid derived from the reaction of rock phosphate and sulphuric acid is clarified by adding to the resultant slurry of phosphoric acid and suspended calcium sulphate and other solid particles a 1-2% aqueous solution of a flocculating agent comprising polyacrylamide or hydrolysed polyacrylonitrile or salt thereof, and subjecting the treated slurry first to a filtration step, then to an evaporation step, and then finally to a centrifugation step. The flocculating agent is used in an amount 0.002 to 2 pounds per ton of phosphoric acid/calcium sulphate slurry.
