Abstract
1,271,112. Water treatment. ENVIROTECH CORP. 13 May, 1969 [23 May, 1968], No. 24397/69. Heading C1C. Phosphate ions in waste water are removed by reaction with trivalent rare earth or yttrium ions whereby a separable precipitate of rare earth or yttrium phosphate is formed. Preferably, the chloride, sulphate or hydroxide of lanthanum or a mixture of rare earth salts from a lanthanum mineral is used. The rare earth ions may be recovered as a hydroxide for re-use in the process by reaction of the phosphate with a strong acid or alkali, preferably sodium hydroxide. If the latter is used, it may be regenerated from the resultant sodium phosphate-sodium hydroxide solution using lime. The process may be used in conjunction with a conventional water treatment comprising settling, sludge removal, aeration and biological oxidation.
