Abstract
1,113,266. Rapid cooling of hot fluids by direct contact with quench liquids. MONSAlSTO CO. 26 July, 1965 [27 July, 1964], No. 31843/65. Heading BIB. Hot fluids, such as hydrocarbon vapours from a cracking plant, are rapidly cooled by injecting, through a thermally-insulated tube, a stream of the hot fluid directly into a divergent spray of quench liquid in a chamber wherein the stream of hot fluid intersects the outer lateral surface of the divergent spray of quench liquid at an angle between 75 and 105, preferably at about 90, and the quench liquid contacts the walls of the chamber below the area of injection. In the apparatus shown, hot hydrocarbon vapours are injected through tubes 11, and hydrocarbon quench liquid is sprayed in through nozzles 14. Purging gas, such as steam or nitrogen, is introduced through inlets 18 into the annular spaces 17 surrounding tubes 11. The cooled fluid, quench liquid and vapourized quench liquid leave the apparatus through outlet IS. Carbon deposition and metal fatique are both less than in conventional quenching apparatus. The cooling of a hot fluid may also be carried out by injecting it through a single tube into two opposing sprays of quench liquid.
