Abstract

1,187,221. Cutting straw. GEORGE PORTEUS & SONS (LEEDS) Ltd. 1 Feb., 1968 [1 Nov., 1966], No. 48861/66. Heading A4C. A method of cutting lengths of straw into a plurality of small pieces comprises feeding a bale of straw 2, with the stalks disposed upright, along a conveyer 4 so that the leading lengths 3 of the bale gravitate towards the belt 10 of the conveyer which extends in a transverse direction to the upright disposition of the stalks, said lengths being guided by the guide cheeks 6 and 8 into a position extending longitudinally along the conveyer, and passed over the guide plate 31 below converging conveyer belt 26 and between grip rollers 22 and 24 which are adapted to compress the portions of straw and passing the straw via nip plates 32 and 34 to a rotary cutting head 36, having a plurality of blades set in a helix around its outer periphery, in such a way that the straw is held in a rigid position for cutting by the plates 32 and 34, the straw being cut by cutting head 36 and the nip plate 34 which acts as a stationary blade. The length of the cut material may be varied by increasing or decreasing the speed of the feed.
