1,173,562. Chloramphenical ester salts. PIERREL S.p.A. 21 April, 1967 [25 April, 1966], No. 18069/66. Heading C2C. Novel chloramphenicol ester salts having the formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen or -COCH(NH 2 )CH 2 C 6 H 5 and R 2 is -COCH(NH 2 )CH 2 C 6 H 5 and HX is an inorganic or organic acid or an N-acetylamino acid, are prepared by reaction of L-#-phenylalanine or racemic #-phenylalanine or an anhydride thereof, substituted at the N atom by a protecting group removable by hydrolysis, with chloramphenico in the presence of a condensing agent, separation of the resulting isomers if the racemic acid is used and removal of the N-protecting group from the ester thus obtained. Pharmaceutical compositions having antibiotic properties comprise, as active ingredient, a chloramphenicol ester salt of the above general formula, together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. Chloramphenicol - 1,3 - bis - (N - carbobenzoxy- #-phenylalaninate) and chloramphenicol-3-(N- carbobemoxy - # - phenylalaninatte) are prepared by reaction of chloramphenicol with N-carbobenzoxy - # - phenylalanine or the anhydride thereof. N - Carbobenzoxy - # - phenylalanine anhydride is prepared by reaction of N-carbobenzoxy -# - phenylalanine with dicyclohexylcarbodiimide.
