[Also in Division F1] A tobacco cutting machine wherein tobacco is compressed in the course of its movement to cutting means, the flow of compressed tobacco is measured, and the feed speed of the compressed tobacco is controlled dependently on the measurement so that the flow rate, comprises a presser conveyor consisting of upper and lower presser chains 6 and 5, a cutting device 15 and independent hydraulic motors 16 and 31 for the conveyor and cutting device. The upper presser chain 6 pivots about axis 8 and is pressed down by a hydraulic presser device 14. Constant flow rate may be obtained by providing tobacco level checking means consisting of a control cam 36 linked to the upper mouthpiece jaw 11 and controlling the speed of motors 16, 31 either by controlling the hydraulic supply pump (Figs. 2 and 7, not shown) or the motors directly (Figs. 4 to 6, not shown). The conveyor motor 16 also drives a rake 2. In connection with the specified embodiments, an electric control circuit (Fig. 3) is described enabling the hydraulic control circuit (Figs. 2 and 7, not shown) to be operated so that the production of an unduly wide tobacco cut during slow down of the machine is avoided by reversing the direction of travel of the tobacco cake and conversely, on starting, a constant cut width may be obtained by delaying forward movement of the tobacco cake until the cutting device is operating at its working speed.
