Abstract

1,165,113. Smelting sulphide materials. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO. OF CANADA Ltd. April 25, 1968 [April 26, 1967], No.19728/68. Heading C7D. A process for producing Ni or Ni-Cu by smelting and refining a molten sulphidic Ni or Ni-Cu bath comprises agitating the bath (e. g. by pneumatic, mechanical or electromagnetic stirring) while blowing a free oxygen containing gas stream (e. g. commercial oxygen) at or over its surface until the S content of the bath is below 4%, incorporating in the bath, at least partially from the gas stream, oxygen in stoichiometric excess of the amount required to form SO 2 with all the remaining S and vacuum treating the bath at below 0À1 atmospheres pressure while it is kept at a high enough temperature that all the S is removed by oxidation. Some of the excess oxygen may be incorporated in the bath by the addition of finely divided NiO or by passing thereinto an oxygen containing gas during the vacuum treatment, and the melt is preferably agitated during the vacuum stage. The excess in weight percent O 2 -S is preferably OÀ1-1. The solid sulphidic material is preferably added to the molten bath after a portion has been removed for vacuum treatment. During or after the vacuum treatment the melt is preferably deoxidized with C, Si, Al, Ca-Si, or with gases containing H 2 , CO or CH 4 .
